Evolution has faced controversy ever since the days of Darwin. The reason for this controversy quite simply is because the theory of evolution revolutionized the way in which we can look at the world. With the knowledge of the theory of evolution, the world's abundance and diversity of life (including us humans) did not have to be attributed to an all knowing invisible "God". Evolution allows us to look at the world and life through a lens of reason and rational thought, not superstition and unverifiable claims of a supernatural realm.
In the mid 1990's the controversy over teaching evolution in schools shook a small New Hampshire town. A new schoolboard official proposed to teach "Creationism" in highschool biology classes. Creationism is the religious belief that a supernatural creator or "god" created all life as it is decribed in the Bible. Overnight the community became divided over issues of science, religion and education. A year and a half later, a new school board official was elected and erradicated "creationism" from the highschool curriculum as it rightfully deserved. But the damage from the conflict still lingers to this day.
In 1999 the Kansas state school board voted to eliminate "evolution" from the state science standards. 2 Years later after much controversy, evolution was returned as it rightfully deserves.
In 2001, a bill was introduces in Michigan to allow the teaching of "Intelligent Design" as a "hypothesis" for the explanation of the creation and abundance of life on planet earth. But we already know that a hypothesis has to possess the ability to be tested! Intelligent Design "theory" is a religious belief that all creatures show proof of their design by an intelligent invisible supernatural creator, not natural causes and evolution. Thus, because Intelligent Design relies on the "supernatural", the "hypothesis" can never be tested! Thus it deserves no spot in a science classroom
The problem with all of this from a purely scientific standpoint is that "creationism" and "Intelligent Design" are not scientific theories! They are religious in nature and reside in a supernatural realm. Science bases itself on evidence and natural causes. Thus all claims that involve the supernatural do not deserve a spot in a science classroom! Their place is in a setting that allows the supernatural such as a church! But not in a science classroom that deals with evidence, valid theories and rational thought!
Scientists and biology teachers understand their responsibility to develop scientifically literate students who can use scientific processes in order to determine patterns and explanations for natural phenomenon! Science wants its students to to understand the unifying theme of evolution. Evolution involves all of the life sciences and its traces and evidence is seen in all life science disciplines!
